Overview

Through this activity guests will learn the brief history of the Maltese traditional tile and will have the ability to create their own tile from scratch (including the base) which they can use either as a coaster or a decorative piece, or else giving it as a small gift to their relatives back home. This is meant to create an element of interactivity and authenticity to the souvenir.

The workshop is run by a professional Art teacher, and forms part of the activities run by a local non-profit organisation catering for the culture and the arts.

Activity itinerary

The activity is based in my small art studio (Which is in a traditional house) in Marsa! you will be given a brief historical information about the Maltese Tiles, then you will create your own one replica tile using plaster or white cement. (size is 10 x 10cm which can be used as a coaster souvenir (On which you can put your cup of coffee). I will show you how this is done from concept to realisation, starting from research, designing your own pattern (or use the ones we have available), making the mould using plaster, transfer the design to the mould, and finally painting it using acrylics which are a quick dry medium! At the end you will be keeping the tile for yourself, and have something handmade (and Maltese) which you can take back home! Other things to note 1. Dress comfortable 2. The activity is ideal for both beginners and advanced 3. Photos included in the price 4. Please note that the tiles are not baked in an oven, they are air dry and made with cement as mentioned earlier. 5. It is possible to do an extra tile, depending on the time you have available. An extra tile would cost 3 euro.

Clive is a very friendly art teacher and explains all about the making of tiles from Malta. You can choose from various designs that are typical for Malta and paint this design on a tile. You do not have to be an experienced painter. You can take the tile home in a nice box, a very nice souvenir from Malta :-)

So recommendable! With Clive, it was great time to understand the Maltese traditional and about the tiles :) Also since it was close to Easter, he shared some baked snacks which is Maltese traditional again! If you would like to experience genuine and authentic Maltese culture, it is the way!

This was a great experience and a way to do something a little different than the usual museums and boat trips. Clive was so nice and made the experience fun and engaging. I loved the idea of this. Ps, when looking for the location, google maps sends you to the wrong side of the street.

Do not miss out on this while in Malta. Truly unique experience in a lovely atmosphere with a great host. We will cherish our tiles as a beautiful memory from Malta forever. Would highly recommend!

Absolutely wonderful experience, Clive was very knowledgable and absolutely fabulous host. We learned all about the tiles we were painting on and came away with a gorgeous tile which we painted ourselves. Definitely recommend !!
