What you can expect

Unlock the secrets behind the Mexican War of Independence during a fascinating excursion through the countryside in Guanajuato. Visit Dolores Hidalgo where the war began, glimpse inspiring murals at the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, and see the charming town of San Miguel de Allende.

From the city of Guanajuato, head east towards Dolores Hidalgo. The bustling metropolis and its surrounding municipality are named for Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who launched the Mexican War of Independence in 1810. Snap a selfie in front of the iconic Casa Miguel Hidalgo and peruse a flourishing handicraft market before moving on.

From Dolores Hidalgo, motor to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco—a World Heritage site lauded for its lovingly wrought murals which cause the church to be nicknamed the Sistine Chapel of Mexico. Take a moment to wander the nave, appreciating the Baroque Mexican artwork. From this religious edifice, head south towards the colonial town of San Miguel de Allende.

In this historic village, cruise past the birthplace of Miguel de Allende—an influential leader in the war against Spain. Wander the town's UNESCO-listed main square and indulge in lunch at your own expense. Finally, end up in Guanajuato's city centre and make your way back to your hotel as afternoon stretches towards evening.
