Mönchengladbach is a city of contrasts that successfully combines urban sophistication with rural charm. Conceived by the post-modernist artist Hans Hollein in 1982, it contains works of Joseph Beuys, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Martin Kippenberger, Markus Oehlen, Heinz Mack, Ulrich Rückriem and Gregor Schneider.
