What you can expect

Once one of the busiest trading ports and spice routes in the world, the city of Malacca now presents a rich mix of culture developed over centuries. Spend a relaxing day absorbing the atmosphere of once majestic forts, busy market places, a divine temple, and local Chinese-Malay cuisine.

Stand atop St. Paul’s Hill as you gaze down on the historic Lower Town, or Bandar Hilir and the Malaccan Straits as you begin your journey. See Fort de Santiago, remains of the once great Portuguese fortress, as well as the 4-century-old St. Paul’s Church that sits on the hill.

Indulge in an authentic Malaccan meal. The city produces the noted Baba-Nyonya cuisine exclusive to the state. Walk your meal off at the famous Jonker Street, packed with stalls surrounding antique, red-brick houses. Shop for lovely handicrafts, clothing, trinkets, and other attractive items.

On the way back to your hotel, stop by Cheng Hoon Teng, or “Temple of Clear Clouds,” the largest Chinese temple in Malaysia, for some lovely photographs to take home. The temple hosts 3 different religions—Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
