United States
  • 30m
The United States Capitol Building is located in Washington, D.C., at the eastern end of the National Mall on a plateau 88 feet above the level of the Potomac River, commanding a westward view across the US Capitol Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument 1.4 miles away and the Lincoln Memorial 2.2 miles away. At the US Capitol the Senate and the House of Representatives come together to discuss, debate and deliberate national policy; develop consensus; and craft the country's laws. As the nation has grown so has the US Capitol: today it covers well over 1.5 million square feet, has over 600 rooms, and miles of corridors. It is crowned by a magnificent white dome that overlooks the city of Washington and has become a widely recognised icon of the American people and government. The US Capitol's design was selected by President George Washington in 1793 and construction began shortly thereafter.

A revolutionary presidential memorial that opened in 1997, the FDR Memorial was not a monolithic, white marble structure, but a flowing landscape architecture design. The memorial is designed as a timeline best experienced by starting at the northernmost end of the memorial. Bronze sculptures by several artists depict the longest-serving president and the major issues he dealt with during his presidency including the Great Depression, the New Deal, and World War II. This entry is an overview of the entire memorial with specific attention to the "Prologue" room. For more specific information about each "room" in the memorial, see the following records: FDR 1st Term FDR 2nd Term FDR 3rd Term FDR 4th Term
Lincoln Memorial
  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
Lincoln Memorial, stately monument in Washington, D.C., honouring Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, and “the virtues of tolerance, honesty, and constancy in the human spirit.” Designed by Henry Bacon on a plan similar to that of the Parthenon in Athens, the structure was constructed on reclaimed marshland along the banks of the Potomac River. The site selection caused controversy; the speaker of the House of Representatives, Joseph Cannon, favoured a more prominent spot across the Potomac, maintaining: “I’ll never let a memorial to Abraham Lincoln be erected in that g– damned swamp.” The cornerstone was set in 1915, and the completed memorial was dedicated before more than 50,000 people on May 30, 1922. Lincoln’s only surviving son, Robert Todd Lincoln, attended the ceremony.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial stands as a symbol of America’s honour and recognition of the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Inscribed on the black granite walls are the names of more than 58,000 men and women who gave their lives or remain missing. The Memorial is dedicated to honour the courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty and country of all who answered the call to serve during one of the most divisive wars in US history.
Korean War Veterans Memorial

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Washington, D.C.'s West Potomac Park, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and just south of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. It memorialises those who served in the Korean War.
National Mall (Pass by)
Drive through the national mall and view over a hundred of sites along the way There’s nothing like arriving on the National Mall for the very first time. Seeing the Washington Monument rise majestically to the sky, surrounded by the stately US Capitol Building at one end and the dignified Lincoln Memorial at the other, it’s hard not to think of America’s history. Explore the swath of land nicknamed “America’s front yard” and you’ll find inspiring monuments and memorials, museums and family fun. The monuments and memorials in this park honour American forefathers and heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country. From the “I Have a Dream” speech to the AIDS Quilt, the Mall is the national stage where movements and celebrations take place, where people gather to have their voices heard. READ
