Overview

This combination tour consists of a morning tour of Xunantunich Maya Temple which is located 20 minutes driving distance from San Ignacio Town in the Maya Village of San Jose Succotz. To get to the site one must cross the Mopan River by a hand cranked ferry, which then gives us access to the one mile ascent into one of Belize’s most popular sites. Here you will enjoy sightings of pristine jungle surroundings, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, birds and iguanas. After lunch we head to Barton Creek Cave, which was once used by the Maya as a sacred ceremonial site. This cave is only accessible by canoe and requires minimal physical activity as you glide along gently. The drive to the cave is very scenic, passing through a few Maya Villages along the way. Formations of stalactites and stalagmites found inside are remarkable.

This combo tour begins at 8:30am and concludes around 4:30pm.  This is a great option for families and fun for all ages.

Activity itinerary

This combination tour incorporates a visit to the popular Maya Temple of Xunantunich located in the Maya village of San Jose Succotz. We will cross the Mopan River on a hand cranked ferry and then drive up to the car park and from there hike to the site. We will spend approximately 1.5 to 2 hours hiking, exploring, climbing pyramids, and learning about the history of this site and the Maya Civilisation. We will break for lunch at a local restaurant in the village and after lunch we will head south east for a visit to the Maya ceremonial cave of Barton Creek; only accessible by canoe. The 45-minute drive to the cave is very scenic, passing through a few Maya Villages along the way. We will spend approximately one hour canoeing through this cave. With the help of your head lights and spot lights your guide will point out some quite remarkable formations of stalactites and stalagmites.
