Marvel at the Alcazar of Córdoba, also known as the Alcazar of the Christian Kings, a castle that contains features from different eras of Andalucía’s past. Discover Roman, Arabic and Visigothic remains on the grounds of a stunning, 13th-century fortress surrounded by spectacular gardens.
Explore the palace and fortress, which was almost entirely renovated in the 1200s. Fernando III took over the city in 1236, when the Caliphal Palace was in disrepair. Subsequent kings reconstructed it and turned it into the fortified mansion it is today. Learn about its history as both headquarters for the Spanish Inquisition and a 20th-century prison.
Walk around the expansive grounds of the Alcazar to appreciate all the different features of the building. The palace, which covers more than 44,000 square feet (4,100 square meters) of land, is a huge square with four impressive corner towers.
The interior of the fortress contains artistic and architectural curiosities. Admire examples of Roman mosaics that were excavated from Corredera Square in the city center. Look for displays that help to explain the complex history of the fortress, as well as archaeological finds such as a Roman sarcophagus.
Head into the basement of the fortress to see an example of Moorish baths. Wander between the cold, warm and hot rooms and stare upward to see the star-shaped skylights.
Relax in the green terraced gardens that spread out across three different levels. This 20th-century addition to the palace includes water features and a rich array of local plant life. Come back to the gardens at night to watch the fountains come to life in a spectacular light display.
Alcazar of the Christian Kings is located in the historic center of Córdoba, within a 10-minute walk from the Calahorra Tower and the Córdoba Mosque-Cathedral. Ride one of several buses to the foot of the Roman Bridge and stroll through the atmospheric Old Town to reach the castle.
