El Nopal Casita-Close to Sul Ross State University

Welcome to El Nopal! -- Located in Alpine, just a couple blocks from Sul Ross State University. Alpine is central to all things West Texas--Marfa, Fort Davis, Big Bend National Park, and Marathon.

Mi casa es su casa--enjoy the cozy comforts of El Nopal and we look forward to having you stay!

** Dogs are welcome with a $40 pet fee. Please be aware there are a few small gaps in the backyard fencing that a small dog could squeeze through. Please supervise animals while outside.
Please be aware that the desert terrain can be quite harsh for pets that are not used to it. Dogs shoes are recommended.

El Nopal Casita does not allow cats.

Enjoy the entire house and spacious backyard.
Off street parking is available.

TV - There is not cable or satellite service, however you may log into your account on the Roku to watch your shows.

El Nopal is 2.5 blocks west of Sul Ross State University's Entrance 3. It is a quiet and friendly
neighborhood within walking distance of Alpine's downtown shops and resturants.

Please be aware that the desert terrain can be quite harsh for dogs that are not used to it. Alpine has cacti, mesquite and lots of grassburs (goatheads). Dogs shoes are highly recommended.
AC/HEATING: El Nopal has mini splits to heat and cool the home. There are instructions in the home to operate these units.

PETS: We are dog friendly, but please be respectful of the home. No pets on the furniture and please pick up any pet waste from the yard. Bags and a bucket is provided. We do not allow cats.
If you have a dog please supervise them while in the backyard. There are a few small holes in the fence that a smaller breed might be able to squeeze through.
Dog shoes are recommended at the desert terrain is harsh on tender paws.

If needed, the dumpster is located on Sul Ross Street about a block west of the home.

Also beware that we have the property regularly treated for pests. However, if you leave food or crumbs out it is very likely to attract ants into the property.

Sweet little spot with great host
We loved this sweet little house in Alpine, and the host was great (especially when I left our coats in the closet 🙈 and they had to be mailed to us). Thank you for everything! We made some great memories!

Frustrated by Lack of Cleanliness
My husband, son, & father in law stayed for a wedding this past weekend and it was a frustrating experience. The kitchen items were dirty, the ice trays were broken and “ice bin” disgusting. I had to throw out broken glassware & gladware containers. There weren’t extra sheets incase of needing to change bedsheets from general dust or debris from alpine life. I’m from a dark sky community and I am fully aware of the out door lighting requirements. We arrived in pitch black conditions 4 of the 8 solar path lights were broken and porch light was useless. We all tripped multiple times trying to navigate the front porch until we could locate our flashlights. The neighbors on the right played loud music well past 1:00AM. We like music but it’s a challenge for getting a kid to bed. The washer/dryer situation is nice to have but you can’t run it at night because it shakes the whole house and you have to separate all the dishes to keep them from breaking or rattling. Turned it on before bed and realized our mistake quickly; so we ran it while we were out. FYI beds are extra firm foam mattresses. Wonderful thoughtful touches for pups (we didn’t bring ours). The last night we were there a big puddle of water gathered on the bathroom floor and we couldn’t find the source. The house is cute and homey. We ended up washing just about all the dishes just to make sure someone did. Overall..meh frustrating experience. We had a great time with family; won’t stay here in the future.

House was clean, charming and comfortable. The fenced yard was an adequate space for our dog but the grass burrs were troublesome.

Location, location, location!
One of the greatest advantages is that you can walk to many goods and services. On most days, I rode my bicycle west and at the edge of the city Wagon Road had views that could rival national parks.

Cute property but NOT pet friendly
We chose this property primarily because it was advertised as pet friendly. The house itself was charmingly rustic and overall acceptable (although the AC units could not cool it comfortably at night). The yard, however, was not at all pet friendly. About a third of the yard was sharp xeriscape rock chips, and the rest of the yard was infested with small goat head thorns. Our poor pup tiptoed painfully through the yard whenever he had to take care of business; then we had to pick thorns out of his paws after he limped back inside.

Great location and house
Check-in was simple and straightforward. The house was clean and contained everything we needed for cooking and staying there. The house is larger than it looks in the photos; more than enough room for our family of 4. Ceiling fans in nearly every room allowed us to avoid needing to use the cooling veru much. Would definitely stay there again.

Great little casita!
The little casita was adorable and funky just a block from the University and a short walk over to shops in town. It was a bit small for us and our 3 dogs and they got a little restless because it rained for half our stay. They did to enjoy the large backyard for one day though. We still thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and would definitely recommend this place.

Some of the dishes were dirty when we arrived. The biggest dislike we had was the tub. It was a converted horse trough. We're all country people so we know one when we see one. The one short person in our group had problems getting in and out of it, and even the taller ones bumped their toes a few times. It was pretty narrow also and it was easy to get tangles with the shower curtain. The stove worked fine, but was a little dated. The A/C worked fine, and we all loved the heater/faux fire place in the evening. The front porch was enjoyable to sit on anytime of the day or night. Overall, we loved it and would stay again. Would have liked to have met April, but with the COVID precautions I understand.
