Discover the step-by-step process of the creation of Jamaican rum, get dizzy on the sweet air, sample the product and purchase some to bring home.

Taste, smell and enjoy some of the world’s finest rum at Appleton Estate, the famous sugar and rum factory near Jamaica’s South Coast. The estate is imbued with all the history and tradition of this industry so dear to Jamaica’s heart.

Appleton Estate is a fascinating experience for rum lovers, but full of curiosities for anyone. Walk the traditional process of distilling this precious commodity, from the harvest to fermentation, barrel aging and signature hand-mixing practiced by Appleton. Afterward purchase a bottle to take home with you or to drink on a warm Jamaican evening. Other items are available in the gift shop. Have more drinks and refreshments in the estate’s café.

The estate once used donkeys in the rum-making process to squeeze the juice out of sugarcane. See how it was done with resident donkey Pax. The fresh water used to make the rum comes from the estate’s own spring.

Wander through the lush fields of sugarcane, which are harvested today both by machine and by machete. Taste the cane juice freshly pressed by hand. This 11,000-acre (4,450-hectare) estate is the oldest sugar and distillery estate in Jamaica, a significant bit of history on this little island nation known for its quality rums. The estate was established in 1655, after England captured Jamaica from Spain. Rum production followed soon after this.

Be sure to have a designated driver or arrange a route taxi. The tour of Appleton Estate includes sampling, starting with rum punch and concluding with tastings of rum production. However, this attraction is suitable for families, too, as children and non-drinkers can taste the sugarcane punch and learn about the manufacturing process. Pay for a tour and ask your guide any questions you have about rum. Appleton Estate is near Lacovia, somewhat away from the main tourist accommodations on the North Coast, but you’ll get to enjoy a scenic trip along your drive.
