Aragonese Castle

Instantly recognizable because of its distinctive red stones, this fortified castle has stood sentry in Brindisi’s harbor since the 15th century.

Step back in time at Aragonese Castle. Because of its location at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, Brindisi was known as Porta d’Oriente (door to the east) and Aragonese Castle served as its figurative gate. The castle, which sits on Sant’Andrea Island, is the first building you would come upon if you were to approach Brindisi by sea. The location was chosen because of its defensive capabilities. Visit Aragonese Castle to learn more about Brindisi’s past.

The island was originally home to a Benedictine abbey dedicated to Sant'Andrea, hence its name. Construction on Aragonese Castle began in 1481 under King Ferdinand I of Naples. The purpose was to build a watchtower that would guard Brindisi’s port from marauding ships. Over time, the structure expanded beyond a watchtower to become a castle. The Forte a Mare, or Sea Fortress, was built in 1558 to serve as barracks for the troops stationed at the castle.

Today you can explore both Aragonese Castle and the accompanying Forte a Mare. Walk along the ramparts and admire the sturdy construction that has guarded the city for centuries. Note the distinctive layout, with the castle on one side and the fortress on the other. The horn-shaped fortress sweeps around the castle, protecting the island, its structures and those who were based there.

While you’re at Aragonese Castle, don’t forget to enjoy the panoramic views that it affords. The bright blue waters of the Adriatic Sea surround the island. To the south, old Brindisi unfolds before your eyes.

Note that Aragonese Castle also goes by many names. You will often hear it called Alfonsino Castle, in honor of Alfonso II of Naples, who was King of Naples for less than a year. Other call it the Red Castle, because of the color of the stones that it is constructed of.

Aragonese Castle can only be visited by prior arrangement. Book an appointment in advance so you can explore this architectural marvel.
