Delightfully relaxing Balinese-inspired villa with three separate pavilions (living, primary bedroom, and guest bedroom) custom-designed to enjoy inside/outside living in your private oasis of sun, lush gardens, hummingbirds, butterflies, toucans, and sparkling pool waters.

Nestled high on a peaceful hilltop, the panoramic views are fantastic: to the northeast, the Atenas Valley with Póas, Barva and Irazú volcanoes in the background, to the southwest the Rio Grande Valley and to the east, the Central Valley. Ideally located in a gated eco-residential community, a thirty-minute drive from San Jose airport, this exquisitely crafted three-pavilion tropical hideaway is close to everything Costa Rica has to offer. Invite family and friends to enjoy the spacious pool and spa, lounge on the terrace with a good book, or surf the WiFi from the hammock.

Location: 26 miles northwest of San Jose; 15 miles west of the international airport and 43 miles northeast of Jaco Weather: Warm during the day; mild at night. The dry season runs from December through mid May. A stroll through the immaculate, palm-lined central park or lunch at one of the many typical small cafes serving local food in town awaits visitors to Atenas. Located on the Central Valley’s western edge, Atenas is a slice of quintessential small town Costa Rican life. With just 5,000 inhabitants (17,000 including the suburbs), Atenas is famous for having one of the best climates in the world, according to National Geographic. The words “El Mejor Clima del Mundo” are emblazoned on every Atenas bus; a valid claim as daily temperatures hover around 80 degrees and dip into the 60s at night. Temperatures: Daily averages 77 to 86 °F. Evenings vary from 62-70 °F. Altitude: 2600 feet above sea level.

Fantastic stay!
This villa was an amazing stay! The house was wonderful, with even better views. The caretaker, Elias, was very helpful and attentive. Atenas is a great escape from the touristy coastal cities. I would absolutely recommend a stay here!

Beautiful Pool and Gardens
This property is outstanding. The pool is the largest we have seen in Costa Rica. The gardens are unbelievable throughout the entire property. The lush vegetation provided total privacy. We loved having the 3 separate buildings for the common areas abs 2 bedroom suites. I would highly recommend.

Palace in the hills
Perfect from start to finish. Great communication with the owner. The caretaker Elias is a gem. The property is meticulously cared for and very well appointed. The private lush grounds and the architecture/layout make this place special. Iguanas, leaf cutter ants, and views with high flying hawks abound. We had a great time here. Perfect for our first couple days in Costa Rica before traveling West.

Beautiful home on top of a quiet mountain top. Was able to see the clouds roll in and hear the birds in the treetops. What a perfect way to end our trip in Costa Rica, close the airport, yet far enough away that it made you feel like you escaped the city. Just breathtaking!

Amazing Property
I've been tracking Joe's Atenas property on VRBO for several years, always wondering if it was as fabulous as the pictures and reviews made it appear. It was everything and more! Exquisitely appointed yet perfectly comfortable, it was the ideal layout for our two couples/4 adults group. The woodwork is truly gorgeous, throughout so tastefully decorated and discreetly presented as a rental; every inch immaculate. It truly felt as if we were staying as personal guests. What a luxurious place to have your vacation!?
My partner and I had an incredible stay here. Somehow, this rental is even more beautiful than the photos! We swam in the pool, relaxed in the hot tub, grilled, watched the sun rise and set, got to know the resident iguana and other flora and fauna - it was wonderful. This vrbo is also perfectly situated to drive to the beach (an hour away) or cloud forests (1.5-2.5 hours away). Elias the property manager was so kind to us and gave us great recommendations. We want to come back!!

Gorgeous Villa
My significant other, as well as another couple, traveled to Costa Rica for my birthday. We enjoyed every minute of our stay at this villa. The views were beautiful, the villa was beautiful, and the caretaker, Elias was there to answer any questions that we had. We had a chef that the owner recommended cook dinner for us our last night at the villa. The food and his service were top-notch.

Crazy Wonderful!!!
We finished our time in Costa Rica at this villa. We were greeted by the caretaker with a smile and a grand tour of the property. After time at the HOT beach area of C. R., it was a treat to have the cool breezes and pool to relax. (Reading books, napping and playing cards were our main activities.) The owner, was very responsive via email when we had a couple of questions. We didn't even leave the property, but stopped at the grocery store in town and gathered what we wanted for our 3 night stay. We will definitely be back when we travel in and out of San Jose Airport.

Paradise in Costa Rica’s Blue Zone
This was our second stay as guests at Villa Tamarindo. The property is a beautifully gated, and private villa tucked away on a hill outside Atenas inside a gated community. It’s the definition of tranquility and Pura Vida. The living quarters are well furnished and very clean. The sleeping quarters are in two separate bungalows to provide additional privacy and luxury. We really enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi during our extended stays. Elias the property manager is kind and was always available and very responsive to our every needs. Atenas is a nice small town with a handful of nice restaurants and cafes. Highly recommend it. We will be back again!. Thank you for another fabulous stay!

Beautiful, serene property with amazing views
We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this relaxing home in the hills above Atenas. The home is beautifully decorated with high-quality furniture and bedding. The kitchen is well-equipped and large. The pool was lovely and we utilized the hot tub each night. The town of Atenas is fairly quiet, which might be what you're looking for in a location. The drive to popular destinations such as Manuel Antonio or Monteverde takes at least 3 hours due to traffic, so pack your patience! I and my family would love to come back and stay at this beautiful home again some day.

So beautiful
We could not have been happier with our stay in Pica Flora at Joes place. The property is so beautiful and private. We saw Toucans on the property as well as a variety of other birds and a couple of iguanas. Everything was perfect and Elias the caretaker was just a joy to work with and Joe the owner was very responsive. We had any and everything we could have needed and felt like we were at a private resort just for us. We have stayed at a lot of different properties and had many wonderful experiences but this property has to be my favorite. We can’t wait to be back and are already making plans to return early next year.

Absolute 10/10! Gosh we cannot say enough great things about how stunning this property was. We stayed for 3 nights and wished we had stayed our whole week here! Elias was great at showing us around and helping us when our friends left important documents even after we had left. The neighborhood is well secured, it wasn’t too hard to navigate to get to. The driveway is very steep so I would recommend a decent vehicle but it’s worth it. There wasn’t AC but we didn’t need it with the windows open and the amazing weather in Atenas. The hot tub and pool were both great and well cleaned. Having a washer and dryer was great as well as all appliances and some small pantry goods like seasonings were provided which was a nice touch. The grounds are absolutely stunning and we all wished we lived here and would definitely return! Very worth the money and made for an incredible stay!

Absolute Perfection!
If you take the time to read through each one of the 100+ five star reviews, mine will sound the same. It truly is better than the pictures even show and communication was excellent. Joe and Elias are so responsive when we needed anything. We rented a car and drove to different places each day including El Toledo Coffee farm, Tucsn Rescue Ranch, La Paz Waterfall & Gardens, Jaco and Esterello Beach. Our family stayed here for seven days and none of us were ready to leave. We truly cannot wait to come back. The views, the birds, the weather….absolutely incredible. If you are at all on the fence about whether to stay here, DO IT! 😉

House with style
There is no doubt this house will give piece of heaven and pamper you! It’s gorgeous with wooden design ….one thing though the house has screen in every rooms but leave space between so we found unexpected guests like lizard, some worm and surprisingly scorpion. The house is located on top of the hill and it’s was windy so they kind all fall and found the way into the room. The house has a beautiful kitchen but you might want to bring your own seasonings as we bought sugars, salt some spices.

Completely fulfilled and exceeded our expectations
Our previous trips to Costa Rica had been adventure-packed, and we had decided ahead of time that all we wanted to do on this trip was relax during our two-week stay. As soon as we stepped foot on this property, we knew we had made the perfect choice to fulfill our goal. The views throughout the property were nothing short of magnificent; the scenery surrounding the villa is absolutely stunning. We purposely had chosen to come during the rainy season when perfect sunny mornings give way to afternoon winds and storms. My husband's favorite time of day was waiting for the mists and clouds to roll in, signalling the change of weather. Except for one overnight side trip to Tabacon Thermal Springs Resort halfway through our trip, we never left Atenas during our stay. In fact, we never left the villa except to take our daily 2-4 mile morning walk, to dine out at restaurants, and to pick up essentials in town. I can't imagine a more perfect place to unwind and revel in the natural beauty that Costa Rica so abundantly offers.

Rockstar Retreat
We cannot say enough about our stay in Joe and Nancy's home. It was PURA VIDA all the way. Joe's description of his home was spot on and lived up to all of our expectations. We had friends that stayed down the street and they spent most of their time with us, Elias was a wonderful help throughout our trip and his wife made a truely awesome meal for our whole gang. If you are looking for peace and solitude, then this is the place for you. Between the the lush gardens and relaxing ammenities you cannot go wrong. Atenas is minutes away and getting back and forth is a snap, Joe and Nancy's house is well built for entertaining or just hanging out if you want to feel like a movie star. Our stay was like a second honeymoon that was unforgettable. You are right in the middle of all the places that you should see when you are in Costa Rica; Jaco beach, Manuel Antonio state park, Poaz volcano and the waterfalls which will take your breath away. If you want the best when you go to CR, you should be staying at Joe's place in Pica Flora!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful Villa
It’s true, the pictures do not do this justice! My husband and I spent 14 beautiful days at the Villa along with another couple. We were warmly greeted by the caretaker, Elias. If we needed anything, we communicated with him using WhatsApp. He even arranged for a Taxi to pick us up one evening so we could go out to dinner. (It gets dark at 6pm and we didn't want to drive knowing that we would be having cocktails with dinner). It felt like we were on our own private resort. Waking up to the birds singing in the morning and seeing beautiful sunrises was a highlight for me. We even saw Keel-Billed Toucans around the Villa. The pool and hot tub were also a hit. We rented a car (necessary if you plan on staying for a while). We ventured out to Manuel Antonio for the day but otherwise, we stuck to Atenas for groceries and an occasional breakfast or lunch out. We were perfectly happy cooking for ourselves. Everything about the Villa is well thought out. The kitchen has everything you could need! I would highly recommend renting this Villa and if we were ever to come back to Costa Rica again, this is the place to stay - no doubt about it.
