Spanning 6 miles (nearly 10 kilometers) from Absecon Inlet to Ventnor City, the Atlantic City Boardwalk is the city’s most iconic destination. The walkway along the New Jersey shore has been providing family entertainment since 1870. Stroll along the boardwalk in the heart of the city’s tourist area to discover the charm of the first boardwalk in the United States. The first boardwalk on the site was made entirely of wooden planks, designed to keep the sand out of the hotels and shops along the shore. In 1889 a hurricane destroyed the second wooden walkway, so these days the structure is enforced with concrete and steel. This proved sufficient to withstand Hurricane Sandy in 2012, with only minor damage done. The Atlantic City Boardwalk is now 60 feet (18 meters) wide and home to hundreds of shops, restaurants, theme parks and bars. It’s lined on one side with picturesque art deco and beaux art-style buildings, including casinos, restaurants and bars. Amusement parks are on the ocean side and Steel Pier is one of the most popular of these. The oceanfront amusement parks, and the beaches below the boardwalk, offer families a fun day out in summer or on a dry winter day. At sunset, enjoy outdoor dining and people-watching before trying your luck in the casinos or dancing the night away. When it’s colder, or on a rainy day, visit the Boardwalk Hall, one of Atlantic City’s premier sport and music venues. The House of Blues and the shops on the piers are great places to spend a few hours indoors too. Learn about local history at Garden Pier, home to the Atlantic City Historical Museum.Atlantic City Boardwalk is easy to reach on foot from downtown Atlantic City hotels, and is also serviced by bus. “Jitney” buses run parallel to the boardwalk. Visitors arriving by car can find metered and free street parking nearby. Many of the hotels and casinos offer underground parking for a fee.
