Augustiner Brewery

This former monastery has been brewing beer since the early 1600s, using a recipe that’s been a well-kept secret for four centuries.

Take a guided tour through the Augustiner Brewery (Augustiner Bräu) to see where the monks who lived here used to brew beer. The tour is both informative and entertaining, taking visitors on the “path of beer” from fermentation, to the washing and filling of bottles. The additive-free beer takes 16 weeks to produce via a six-step procedure. The recipe specifics have been kept a secret for four centuries. Allow several hours to learn about the brewing method and then sample the products in the largest beer hall in Austria. This impressive room has high baroque-style ceilings and long wooden tables. There is also a garden that’s pleasant to sit in on sunny days. Buy a token from the cashier, and then stand in line at the self-service bar to fill your cup. Otherwise, pay a small fee to have your beer served by a waiter. Specialty beers to try include Lenten Beer, available from Ash Wednesday to Easter, and Christmas Bock during the winter months. While beer drinking is the priority, you can enjoy other events at the brewery. Come to watch football matches on a large screen and to listen to live music. Check the brewery’s website for event days and times. Families are welcome at the brewery. The monastery was established for Augustinian monks on the northern slopes of Mönschberg mountain between 1607 and 1614. The monks began brewing beer in 1621 in the abbey buildings. Today, the same beer is produced although the monastery is no longer operating.Augustiner Brewery is a short drive from the center of the Old Town. There is a free parking. Alternately, you can take a bus to the brewery from Salzburg’s main train station. The brewery is open daily, except major public holidays. Tours run in the afternoon on week days and must be booked in advance.
