Tour this well-preserved 19th-century mansion and study its rooms decorated in period furniture, providing a glimpse into the elegance of Victorian décor.

Get a fascinating insight into the splendor of Charlottetown’s Victorian-era past at Beaconsfield Historic House. Peek inside some of the 25 rooms of this mansion to see how the families of prominent city residents once lived. The house’s garden offers wonderful views across Charlottetown Harbour.

Learn about the site’s history. Beaconsfield Historic House dates back to 1877, when it was built for the family of James Peake, an affluent merchant and shipbuilder. Henry Cundall, a wealthy landowner and philanthropist, moved in with his sisters in 1883. Following Cundall’s passing in 1916, and before becoming a heritage museum, the house served as a ladies’ residence and a home for student nurses.

Venture inside to meet a knowledgeable guide, who will take you on a tour of the most significant rooms. Browse the displays of antique wooden furniture, china tableware and silverware. Note the colorful and patterned wallpaper, typically used in Victorian times as a sign of opulence. Admire the gold-framed paintings, porcelain chandeliers and intricately designed stained-glass window.

Step out onto the veranda, which leads to a flower-filled garden. Both are great vantage points for views over Charlottetown Harbour and toward Victoria Park. Purchase souvenirs, such as artwork, jewelry and pottery, at the small gift shop.

Ask your guide about special events that take place in the Carriage House. These events range from live music performances to children’s theater shows.

Find the house and museum about a 10-minute walk from Charlottetown’s city center. A large, metered parking area is adjacent to the attraction. Combine your time here with a visit to the Government House of Prince Edward Island and Victoria Park, home to Prince Edward Battery.

Beaconsfield Historic House is open year-round and has an admission fee. From June to August the house is open from Sunday to Friday. In May, September and October it’s open from Monday to Friday. Between November and April it’s open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Visit the house’s official website for more information.
