Bern Art Museum

Bern Art Museum

Inside one of the oldest art museums in Switzerland, view a vast treasure trove of art from the last 800 years, including works by renowned masters.

More than 50,000 objects fill the Bern Art Museum, covering eight centuries of artistic endeavors. Among the showcased items are sculptures, paintings, videos, drawings, prints and photographs. The focus is on art produced in Bern, Swiss art, 19th-century French art and international modern art.

Peruse ever-changing exhibitions drawn from the museum's extensive collection, including prints from the 16th century, 19th-century realist paintings and about 200 masterpieces.

On your visit you might see works by Picasso, Méret Oppenheim, Toulouse-Lautrec, van Gogh and many other renowned artists. You may also have opportunities to explore such art movements as surrealism, cubism and impressionism.

The museum offers delights for the children in your party as well. During the weekends take advantage of children’s programs, including viewings of selected works and painting and creating in a studio. Once a month, workshops are held for English-speaking children. Visit Bern Art Museum's website for more information.

The museum is located in the center of Bern, a short walking distance from Bern’s railway station. Buses from the station stop close to the museum. Alternatively, drive and use the metered parking garage nearby.

Bern Art Museum is open every day except Mondays and major public holidays. The admission charges offer reductions for students, retirees and people with disabilities. Children below the age of 16 get in for free. Purchase a Museum Card from the train station, BearPark or online and receive free admission to every museum in the city for 24 or 48 hours. The museum offers guided tours of the exhibits on Tuesdays and Sundays. Tours are included with the ticket price and are conducted in English occasionally.

Once you have toured the museum, consider a visit to Bern’s Old Town, which is about 0.5 mile (750 meters) away. A walk around its streets will take you to Berner Münster, medieval arcades and the clock tower with its decorative 16th-century astronomical clock.
