Allow yourself to be absorbed by the diverse cultures of Africa, Asia, America and the Pacific Islands at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, one of the most extensive museum collections in Orange County. From African tribal masks to American Civil War uniforms, Neolithic artefacts to modern art, over 120,000 fascinating items are on display. It’s easy to while away three or four hours here, so make sure you leave plenty of time to do full justice to your visit.One of the museum’s most popular attractions is its collection of Native American art, including over 24,000 pieces dating back to prehistoric times. You can also admire over 2,000 artworks by important Californian artists, including numerous paintings by William and Alberta McCloskey, the celebrated husband-and-wife team who made a national name for themselves in the late 19th century for their portraits and still lifes.Once you’ve explored the permanent collections, peruse the museum’s intriguing programme of visiting exhibitions and related events, including workshops, lectures and live performances – check ahead on the website or simply turn up and see what’s happening! Then take a break in the popular on-site Tangata restaurant or wander around the picturesque grounds and admire the Spanish Mission-style architecture. If you’ve got youngsters in tow, let them loose in Kidseum, an extension to the main museum, where they can have fun while learning at the same time.The Bowers Museum is a five-minute drive from the centre of Santa Ana, and can be reached by bus or car on-site pay parking is provided. The main museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and there is free entry on the first Sunday of the month – but be prepared to queue if you want to view the featured visiting exhibition, as access is restricted to 250 people per hour. Kidseum has varied opening hours depending on the time of year, so check before making a special journey. Advance reservation is recommended for the Tangata restaurant.
