Entertainment and education go hand in hand at this child-friendly facility in Santa Ana.

From dinosaurs to space travel, earthquakes to recycling, youngsters will find their knowledge expanded and their imaginations stimulated at the Discovery Science Center (DSC). This popular Santa Ana attraction covers 5,500 square metres and includes over 100 interactive exhibits exploring many themes, from physiology to seismology – living proof that science doesn’t have to be just for boffins and grown-ups. Towering over the site is the unmistakable shape of a giant black cube, clad in solar panels which generate a proportion of the DSC’s own electricity. This eye-catching construction houses the Boeing Rocket Lab, where you can see a real Delta Rocket RS-68 Booster Engine and experience the thrill of a simulated rocket launch complete with state-of-the-art sound effects and lifelike images. The emphasis throughout the centre as a whole is on interactivity, and there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in a variety of fascinating experiences. Travel through a dinosaur’s digestive system, make your own clouds, relive historic earthquakes and storms and test your reactions against a professional ice hockey player. Take the Eco Challenge by going digital shopping to choose the greenest food packaging, then learn the best way to recycle your household rubbish. Reach new heights on the rock wall, measure your own seismic tremors and make an impression on the pin wall. The DSC welcomes over 450,000 visitors each year, including many school parties, so don’t be surprised if you have to queue for your favourite exhibits however, you can beat the crowds at the ticket office by buying admission tickets online in advance. Alongside the permanent attractions, the centre also mounts temporary exhibitions and shows short films on a variety of related subjects. These are subject to a small additional charge on top of general admission. The centre is open every day except Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas Day. Located in the centre of Santa Ana, it is easily accessible by public transport, or alternatively there is convenient pay parking on-site.
