Formerly a collection of rice plantations, this vast outdoor museum is now home to a zoo and sculpture garden.

Brookgreen Gardens is one of the most popular attractions in the Myrtle Beach area. Explore its walking trails and sites of historical significance, take part in one of its workshops or relax in its themed gardens. There's so much to do, you'll be glad your ticket is valid for a week!Visitors flock to Brookgreen's renowned sculpture garden to enjoy the 1,400 works of art by more than 350 artists, and the garden's 2,000 species of plant life. The combination of magnificent art and beautifully landscaped surroundings makes the sculpture park the perfect place for a peaceful stroll.If you fancy a longer walk, Brookgreen Gardens also offers a vast network of trails. Maps and advice are available from the Welcome Center, or you can join a guided tour. As you pass through former rice plantations, imagine what life was like when they were in use. Take the Lowcountry Trail if you have an interest in archaeology digs have revealed the remains of four structures on the hillside. Like the majority of rice plantations in the area, Brookgreen used African slaves, and you'll find information about the slave experience on your free audio guide and on plaques located throughout the trail.Brookgreen Gardens is great for children, and the Welcome Center provides a booklet highlighting the activities, attractions and sights kids might enjoy. The Lowcountry Zoo, which is home to both rescued and captive animals, is a good family-friendly option. Get up close with some of the local wildlife, including river otters, owls, hawks, alligators and the majestic bald eagle. Or check out the Zoo's collection of rare farm animals to see some unusual sheep, goats, cows and horses. Don't miss the chance to watch the animals eat their lunch join the free 50-minute Mother Nature's Café tour and listen to the guides as they share interesting facts about the animals.Brookgreen Gardens is 32 kilometres south of Myrtle Beach. The gardens and attractions are open every day, and there are two cafés and a restaurant on site. Admission includes most tours and exhibits and all activities.
