Huntington Beach State Park is a must for anyone with an interest in nature. Admire the view from the observation decks as you a stroll along the park's network of walking trails. You can swim or fish in the ocean or simply enjoy the five kilometres of pristine sand.An ornithologist's paradise, Huntington is celebrated as one of the best bird-watching locations on the eastern seaboard. There are more than 300 resident species of bird in the park, and you're sure to spot some of the South's native ducks, seabirds and spoonbills. Animal lovers should check the Huntington Beach State Park website for information about the guided wildlife tours. These are run by the Friends of Huntington Beach State Park from spring to autumn (weather permitting) and include trips to the salt marches to look for crabs, and alligator tours. One of the other main draws to the park is the impressive Atalaya Castle. Built in the early 1930s, it was the winter residence of the philanthropist Archer Huntington and his wife, the celebrated sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Huntington was a Spanish scholar, and he and his wife's love of Spanish culture is evident in their design for this sprawling mansion, which replicates the architecture of a traditional Andalusian villa. The house and its grounds were leased to the state in 1960 and are now open to visitors. A 45-minute audio guide can be purchased for a small fee. Alternatively, if you're here between March and October, join one of the Friends of Huntington Beach State Park guided tours of Atalaya, which also housed Anna Hyatt Huntington's studio.Admission to Huntington Beach State Park is inexpensive and includes most park tours. It costs more to visit Atalaya, but guided tours are included. Entry to both is free for children under five. The park is located 32 kilometres south of Myrtle Beach, and there's a shop onsite that sells fishing gear, souvenirs and a selection of groceries.
