1,600 butterflies flutter through the air in this fascinating attraction, a short drive to the northwest of Denver.
Opened in 1995, Butterfly Pavilion was the first not-for-profit zoo focusing on insects in the United States. Soak up 2,787 square metres of humid tropical rainforest, with a stunning array of butterflies in vivid hues and sober colours filling the air around you. This is an enjoyable and educational trip which is sure to please the whole family.Wings of the Tropics replicates the heat and steamy air of the natural habitats of its inhabitants throughout the year, which can make a nice break from the frigid Colorado winter! This is one of six permanent displays here.Butterfly farms all over the globe supply 600 to 1,000 new insects every week. This involvement in the industry has lead Butterfly Pavilion to take its conservation responsibilities very seriously, and $80,000 per year is contributed to farmers using sustainable methods.Hardy youngsters will delight at the chance to hold Rosie the tarantula in the Crawl-A-See-'Em display. Rosie is totally safe to touch, and is sure to excite and fascinate. Water's Edge also offers an opportunity to experience the texture of starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs, while also learning about the wonders of the deep, from coral to shrimp to sea snails.Step outside to enjoy the nature paths and gardens on the 4.5 hectares of the pavilion. Regional animals like prairie dogs, rabbits and eagles are free to roam the grounds, and are often seen along the 800-metre walking trail.Butterfly Pavilion is in Westminster, a 15-minute drive from central Denver. It is open daily, but is best avoided during school hours due to the many students who often visit on tours. Snacks are available on site, and parking is free of charge.
