Ride a century-old funicular railway to a sunny courtyard with cafés and picnic lawns. Attend one of the events in its summertime open-air concert series.

During your Los Angeles vacation, visit California Plaza and Angels Flight Railway, a historical and entertainment attraction in the lively Bunker Hill district. Enjoy a journey on one of the world’s shortest railway lines. Gaze at the gleaming glass-paneled skyscrapers of downtown from a stylish courtyard plaza. Attend outdoor shows by local bands, singer-songwriters and street performers.

The Angels Flight Railway takes riders on a 298-foot-long (91-meter) trip from Hill Street to a platform at the edge of California Plaza. Sit in one of the famous orange and black cars just as millions of tourists and office workers have done since operations began in 1901. Snap photos of an attraction that has featured in La La Land and Perry Mason and is mentioned in the Four Tops song L.A. (My Town).

Disembark at the railway’s upper level and admire its Beaux Arts-style and castle-like station building. To the rear of the station is the California Plaza public space and live entertainment venue. Delight in alfresco dining at cafés, set up a picnic on the lush green lawns or relax in the sunshine from the sun deck. Look up at One California Plaza, Two California Plaza and Bank of America Building skyscrapers that dominate the skyline.

From June to mid August the plaza is the location for free outdoor concerts and cultural events. Discover the talents of dance groups, music acts and theater companies from the Los Angeles region. The diverse program includes everything from Brazilian capoeira performers to marching bands, orchestras and poets.

Find both attractions in the southeastern corner of the Bunker Hill district. Pershing Square subway station is a 1-minute walk away. Close by are the Bradbury Building and Grand Central Market.

California Plaza and Angels Flight Railway are open daily. There is a fee to ride the funicular railway. Outside of its operating hours, travel between the railway’s upper and lower stations via a staircase.
