Occupying the site of Cardiff’s original Capital Theatre, from which it takes its name, the Capitol Shopping Centre opened in 1990 and was originally designed to echo Victorian architecture, in particular Cardiff’s Victorian era arcades dating from the late 1800s. In 1999, the centre underwent a revamp that transformed it with smart new walkways and entrances. Today, the mall is instantly recognisable for its high, glass-fronted main entrance, with its fanned glass roof.
Set on two floors, the Capitol Shopping Centre is home to around 40 retailers and leisure outlets, from well-known fashion emporiums and a household name chemist, to mobile phone and sportswear shops, and a variety of coffee houses, cafes and food outlets.
Fashion-wise, the centre boasts a mix of high end and high street names in the form of Jaeger, Austin Reed, Hobbs, H&M, Accessorize and more. Other attractions include a Tesco Metro, Caffé Nero, a Halifax Building Society branch, a gym, and a café-bar with a nightclub.
Setting the seal on the mall is a five-screen cinema showing the latest blockbuster movies, complete with rocker seats, cutting-edge digital projections and a licensed bar.
The Capitol Shopping Centre is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Parking for 388 vehicles is available on site.
