Caracas Beach

Have a picnic in the gazebos and go snorkeling at the southern end of this beach within the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.

Caracas Beach is a picturesque stretch of secluded white sand between verdant hills and grassy mounds. Its clear, warm water is on a gentle, sandy slope. The tepid waves offer ideal family swimming conditions. Watch your children as they take boogie boards out onto the waves.

Pick a spot in this wide beach and lay down a blanket to enjoy the sun and have a picnic. The bay area also has small gazebos for shelter and meals. Snap photos of the emerald vegetation from the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge that engulfs the beach. Local residents and vacationers often gather on Sundays to play volleyball and other fun sports on the sandy strand.

Sunbathe on a deckchair to enhance your tan. Bring an umbrella to the beach, which has fairly little shade aside from some palm trees and picnic shelters. Cool down with a swim in the Caribbean Sea and float on the ocean swell with your kids.

Go snorkeling to see the great range of colorful fish in the clear water. The southern end of the beach, beside the rocky outcrop, has excellent snorkeling conditions. Stroll along the strand and find the cliffs and small mountains that flank its sides. The promontory of the northern side contains intriguing caves for exploring.

Arrive at sunrise to miss the crowds as you enjoy the scenic views. Jog along the empty strand in the early hours. On the horizon lies the small islet of Chiva Cay.

Note that the strand has also been known as Red Beach. It was used as the scenic setting for a Victoria’s Secret Swim Special. Due to the secluded nature of the beach, it has few facilities.

Caracas Beach overlooks Corcho Bay on the central southern part of Vieques Island in Puerto Rico. Drive south from Isabel II for 5 miles (8 kilometers) to get here in about 15 minutes. Leave your car in the free parking lot. Visit nearby attractions, such as García Beach, Chiva Cay and Secret Beach.
