City Park

City Park stretches over 130 hectares of parkland. It was purchased by the City and County of Denver in 1881, and has gone on to become an important part of the cultural fabric of the city.The name City Park is used to refer to the surrounding areas, as well as the park itself. This is a relaxed and cultivated inner-city area, filled with fascinating bookshops, appetising restaurants and classy cafés. Colfax Avenue is a great place for window shopping, or to sit back and watch the world go by while enjoying a coffee.Returning to the park, weekends see it at its most lively: families come for a day out, couples for a romantic picnic while others just come for a laid-back afternoon on the green lawns. The park has its share of beautiful tall trees, as well as a number of lakes which are perfect for relaxing beside with a book.There are also plenty of cycling and running paths for those who'd like to work up a sweat. Admire the Shakespeare Elm, grown from a cutting procured from the Bard's grave in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. This was planted in 1916, exactly 300 years to the day after Shakespeare's death.There are regular free jazz concerts on Sunday evenings during the course of the summer. Look up the City Park Jazz website to find out more about starting times and about the excellent and very popular programme they run.Top-class attractions such as Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science can be found within the boundaries of the park, along with an 18-hole golf course.City Park is found near Denver city centre, and is easily reached on a range of public transport options.
