City Square showing street scenes, heritage elements and a square or plaza

Dundee’s cultural center lies in this civic square, where exciting local events and markets occur beneath the grand façades of historic buildings.

Wander across the pretty diamond-patterned pavement of Dundee’s City Square to experience the laid-back and community-minded essence of the city. Spot friends dining beneath colorful café awnings, children playing near the fountain or local farmers unloading their wares at the market. Admire the stunning heritage architecture of the square’s civic buildings or watch a performance at the gorgeous Caird Hall auditorium.

Strolling through Dundee’s city center, you’ll easily be drawn into City Square. Have breakfast or coffee at one of the square’s cafés or restaurants. When the weather is warm, sit at one of the tables that spill into the square and watch the city stir into life.

You might see locals setting up the day’s market or event. Concerts, parades and community festivals are held regularly within the spacious City Square. Check out the farmers market on the third Saturday of the month or peruse the wares in the shops that open up into the square. Come face-to-face with a bronze statue of Desperate Dan, one of the heroes of The Dandy comics or relax near the square’s pretty fountains.

City Square is surrounded by some of the city’s key cultural venues. Admire the bold portico of Caird Hall and Marryat Hall and find out what events are scheduled at these state-of-the-art concert auditoriums. You might see the Royal Scottish National Orchestra or a recital on the hall’s pipe organ.

Continue strolling along the pedestrianized section of High Street to find Nethergate. This area is dominated by the magnificent St. Mary’s Church, which features a steeple that dates back to the 1480s.

As evening falls, settle in at a cozy restaurant or pub and plan the next day of your visit in Dundee.

City Square is located in the heart of Dundee. Several local buses stop nearby and the city’s main train station is less than a 5-minute walk away. From City Square, walk to the waterfront, St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, McManus Galleries and the Howff.
