Escape NYC to play in the waves, sunbathe on fine, white sands or stroll past the exclusive mansions that line the dunes of one of the best beaches in the Hamptons.

Cooper’s Beach is a glistening beach that stretches along the southern shore of Long Island, beside the historic upmarket town of Southampton. With its wide sandy beach backed by mansion-studded sandy dunes and attractive views of the Atlantic Ocean, Cooper’s Beach is very popular with city dwellers from New York.

Head to the concession stand on arrival and rent a beach umbrella and chairs to make yourself comfortable on the wide stretch of white sand. During the high season and on weekends, move farther down the beach if you prefer a bit of space to yourself. Jump in for a swim in the waters that are shielded from the colder Labrador currents but will still refresh you nicely in summer.

Lifeguards are on duty during the swimming season, making this beach a safe destination for families with smaller children too. Let the kids play in the small waves that lap the beach and build forts or sandcastles. Larger waves often roll in too, so those with a bodyboard or surfboard can enjoy some thrilling rides. Rinse down afterwards in the handy beachside shower facilities, where there are also toilets.

If you are visiting during the colder months, take a stroll along the beach to take in the stunning ocean views and sounds of sea gulls and endless waves. Rolling dunes, covered in American beach grass, flank the beach. Glance up at the eclectic mix of extravagant mansions dotted among the dunes along the length of the beach.

The clean sandy beach is a great spot for a family picnic, so remember to bring some home-made sandwiches and drinks with you. Alternatively, visit the beach bar or restaurant and enjoy refreshing drinks and tasty snacks or luxurious meals with a view.

Cooper’s Beach is located approximately 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) from the center of Southampton. Parking is available at the beach however, it is one of the more expensive carparks in the area due to the high demand. Consider taking the Jitney bus or train. Renting a bike and cycling to the beach is also a great alternative. Alternatively, come at the end of the afternoon for free parking and soak up the serenity of the beach at sunset.

It costs $50 to park your car which leaves a slightly bitter taste despite it being a lovely beach
