Relax in this tranquil sandy bay hidden behind quaint coastal villas among the sand dunes and choppy waves of Monterey Bay.

Del Monte Beach is a pristine stretch of sand that is a popular spot for surfing and beachcombing. It is an extension of the larger Monterey State Beach and shares many of the same amenities. Appreciate the serene ambiance and silence that take you away from the crowds and noise of the city.

Arrive at this secluded beach and follow the wooden boardwalk trail that meanders around the sand dunes. Relax at a picnic table with some food and enjoy the sound of the crashing ocean water. Join the swathes of surfers on the rough waves that massage the shoreline.

Bring a kite to fly in the coastal breeze or do some beachcombing at low tide. Lay down a blanket and sunbathe in this pleasant area, which experiences warm weather year-round.

The beach took its name from the historic Del Monte Resort, which closed down and was replaced by the Naval Postgraduate School. Admire the coastal homes behind the dunes that overlook the beach. The Monterey Bay Coastal Trail running along the back of the beach offers pretty floral displays and ocean views. Wander along the rest of Monterey State Beach, which continues across a large portion of the Monterey Bay coastline.

Note that the beach is open at all times and free to access. Lifeguards do not patrol this part of the bay, so make sure to watch your kids at all times and be particularly vigilant in rough weather. Feel free to bring dogs, provided they are kept on a leash.

Del Monte Beach is on the northern coast of its namesake neighborhood in the eastern outskirts of Monterey. Walk or ride a bus for the 2-mile (3-kilometer) journey east from Monterey’s city center. Visit nearby landmarks, such as Laguna Grande Regional Park, Del Monte Lake and Roberts Lake. Leave your car in the free parking spaces near the dunes at the back of the beach or metered on-street parking near the pier.
