Elverum is a traditional Norwegian town and a municipality of the same name, located within the scenic south of Hedmark county. Considering it is a relatively small place, Elverum is certainly blessed with more than its fair share of attractions. Come here to hike through dense forests and alongside winding rivers, discover the joy of cross-country skiing, and visit some truly enchanting museums and galleries.
Begin your exploration of the town with a visit to the wonderful Norwegian Forest Museum. This is the place to get a feel for the key activities and industries that have been at the core of this region’s identity over the centuries. Learn all about the roles trapping, hunting, forestry and fishing have historically played in shaping the local character and economy. The vast, outdoor Glomdalsmuseet also offers a captivating, and very child-friendly, insight into regional culture.
Next, get out of the town for a real taste of the natural bounty showcased by the museum. Take to the Glomma or Rena rivers for a fishing, boating or swimming trip, ideal activities in the warmer months. The lush Finnskogen forest also provides ample opportunities for outdoor fun. Explore its miles of trails by foot or by bike and be ready to spot birds and small forest creatures as you go. If you get really lucky, you could even see one of Norway’s famous moose.
Winter brings a whole new range of things to do. Arrive in March and you will see the famous Birkebeiner ski race. Take to the slopes yourself at the Rena Alpine and Ski Centre, a 40-minute drive to the north of Elverum. When you’re ready to escape the cold, head to the lovely Elverum Art Gallery to warm up as you view some Nordic art.
Drive to Elverum from Oslo and you can reach your destination within 2 hours. The town also has a train station and good bus connections to the capital. Come in winter to see the area covered in thick snow, or in summer to make the most of the great hiking routes all around the town.
