Discover some of Vermont’s most stunning wilderness by bicycling, hiking or driving through one of the Northeast’s largest national forests.

Explore rugged mountains and lush woodlands in Green Mountain National Forest. The forest stretches for nearly 400,000 acres (160,000 hectares) across southwestern and central Vermont. Trek along its many trails, investigate historic sites and immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural world.

Come in fall to see the mountains in colorful splendor as frost changes leaves to brilliant yellows, oranges and reds. It’s easy to understand why this is the most popular season to visit Green Mountain National Forest. Tour the fall foliage on foot, by bicycle or in your car to fully appreciate the changing leaves. Look for moose, particularly around swamplands where the iconic antlered creatures like to feed.

Discover the state’s history across more than 2,000 historic and archaeological sites scattered throughout Green Mountain National Forest. Investigate ancient Native American campgrounds, ruins of colonial farmsteads and structures built as part of New Deal public works projects in the 1930s.

With over 900 miles (1,400 kilometers) of multi-use trails at your disposal, exploration opportunities are endless. Hike, bike or even ride on horseback through the wilderness. Walk along sections of the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail, which snake through the heart of the Green Mountain National Forest

Winter brings snow and a bitter chill to Vermont, but don’t let that deter you. Go downhill skiing or snowboarding or explore the area on snowshoes or cross-country skis. Select from three alpine ski areas and more than 20 spots for cross-country skiing within the park.

Get the proper license to fish for varied trout and other fish in the park’s ponds and streams. Sleep under the stars in one of the many rustic campsites dotted across the area. Watch for bear, deer, turkeys and other wild animals that live in the park.

Enjoy Green Mountain National Forest in all four seasons, with spring wildflowers, summer hikes, fall foliage and winter snow sports. Locals sometimes call it a six-season park, with short mud and black fly seasons making up the other two. Be sure to pack and plan accordingly depending on the month you visit.
