Hand in your betting slips, get drinks in the VIP area and watch locals passionately scrutinizing every horse race with binoculars in this lively venue.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Happy Valley Racecourse is the outstanding venue in Hong Kong for horse racing. The sport is a huge part of the local culture and economy and is best viewed under the lights of a night race at this 55,000-seat arena. Sit back and enjoy the race, with views of the area’s many skyscrapers in the background.

Witness proceedings from the Grandstand near the action. The tickets here are cheaper, while the atmosphere is a little more raucous. Get close to the railings and watch the jockeys and their horses appear to fly by at top speeds. Purchase snacks and drinks from the various spots serving a variety of fast food. On-site pubs are always popular with the racing crowd.

You may prefer the Second Floor Terrace, which is a little pricier and provides excellent views of the racecourse from above. Make calculations at the writing tables and place your bets at the counters. Observe regular bettors furiously making notes and passionately watching the horses through their binoculars.

For a more exclusive experience, head to the Members Enclosure and take the Come Horseracing Tour that includes a buffet and drinks and a place in the Members Boxes. With this option, you can tour the paddocks and posts.

It is thought that the British first introduced horse racing to Hong Kong in the 1840s. The first permanent stands appeared on this site in 1931. Today gates tend to open in the late afternoon on Wednesdays, with the first race taking place a couple hours later. Roughly 30-minute intervals break up the seven or eight races on a typical meeting event. Wear smart-casual clothing. Racing events are open only to those over 18.

The Happy Valley Racecourse is south of Causeway Bay and east of the Central section of Hong Kong. It stands between the districts of Wan Chai and Happy Valley. Walk from the Causeway Bay metro station for about 10 minutes to reach it. While here, explore the area for other highlights such as the Blue House, Queen Elizabeth Stadium and the Hong Kong Racing Museum.
