Get a true taste of Native American art, culture and history at this superb Phoenix museum.

The world-class Phoenix Heard Museum was founded by Dwight and Maie Heard in 1929 in order to house their personal collection of American Indian artwork. Spread out over two locations, one in North Scottsdale and the main one in Central Phoenix, this pioneering museum is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Native American art, culture and history and is a must for any culture vulture on holidays in Phoenix.Set in the lush surroundings of a beautiful Spanish Colonial building, the extensive collection of over 40,000 artefacts is spread across twelve galleries and includes a mix of Native American paintings, sculptures and photography. With an impressive selection of artwork from a range of pre-Colombian to contemporary Native American artists, visitors will be enthralled, intrigued and inspired in equal measure.Arguably, the highlight of the museum is the wonderful exhibit Home: Native People in the Southwest. Here, personal recollections of indigenous peoples are thoughtfully and intelligently interwoven with native artwork, giving visitors an insight into the importance of family, landscape and language traditions within the various tribal communities. State-of-the-art audiovisual displays further illustrate the history and culture of these native peoples. This exhibit is also home to over 2,000 cultural gems such as jewellery, pottery and textiles as well as an intriguing selection of 500 Hopi Katsina dolls. This family-friendly museum uses a number of fun interactive exhibits to educate visitors about the heritage and living culture of the Native American peoples. Learn how to make Yaqui paper flowers and Apache burden baskets or create bespoke jewellery using native weave beads. There’s a lot to see and do here. Learn more about native heritage and culture from one of the informative lectures or wander around the festival markets and soak up the fun atmosphere. Coincide your trip with the vibrant World Championship Hoop Dance contest and you’ll be in for a real treat. This exciting and colourful competition attracts Native American tribes from all over North America. Pay close attention and you are sure to pick up some tips to impress the folks back home!
