Horning

Travel Guide

Visit this easygoing town in eastern Jutland, a gateway to Denmark’s Lake District. Enjoy outings to historic churches and scenic woodland.

Choose Hørning as a great base for your next vacation with an exploration of Denmark’s Lake District. This laid-back town has several pretty churches and attractive forests. Hørning lies near the east coast of Jutland, a large peninsula that forms Denmark’s mainland region and connects the country with Germany.

In this quiet town, people spend their days in a leisurely manner. Hørning’s streets are ideal for walking or enjoying the traditional Danish hobby of cycling. Stoll around the residential neighborhoods to admire houses with perfectly groomed gardens.

Hørning’s churches stand as historical monuments, including the 12th-century Hørning Kirke. Winding roads travel from the town center and pass sprawling green fields to other religious landmarks. Head to Adslev Kirke and Blegind Kirke, Romanesque churches that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries.

On a sunny day, walk amid tall trees and breathe in the fresh country air at forests, such as Adslev Skov and Stilling Skov. Catch a train to Højbjerg and visit the Moesgaard Museum. Here, interactive exhibits reveal the stories of ancient peoples, from Bronze Age people to the Grauballe Man. This bog body is that of a man from the third century B.C., found mummified in the area’s peat bog.

Just a 15-minute drive south of Hørning is Skanderborg, an ideal town for a daytrip. It is home to Skanderborg Slotskirke, a former residence of the Danish royal family. Skanderborg also marks the eastern edge of Denmark’s Lake District, a glorious region of glistening lakes, meandering rivers and peaceful woods. Follow biking and walking trails, go boating and kayaking or enjoy picnics at riverfront beaches.

Reach Hørning by flying to Aarhus or Copenhagen and then taking a train or renting a car. Public trains and buses connect the town with other major destinations, including Aalborg, Esbjerg and Odense. Come to Denmark to experience Hørning, one of the many attractive towns that welcome visitors on a journey beyond the nation’s capital.

Very nice hotel with great breakfast
"Great clean hotel with a fantastic breakfast and a lovely view from the restaurant. Easy to check in and out. The room was well suited to work in on a laptop in. However, it was very hot in the room and we couldn't find a way to turn down the heat. It was too noisy from the street outside to sleep ..."

"The heating didn’t work which seems rather strange. The solution was fine, though: all I had to do was tell the reception and they supplied a portable electric heater which was very adequate."

Really nice stay.
"Great stay at this lovely hotel. As a vegetarian, the breakfast was a bit weak and the TV in my room was impossible to turn on, but otherwise a great stay."
