All roads lead to Indy. At least that’s what the motor racing fanatics say when they flock by the thousands each year to one of the world’s best-known speedways. The 2.5-mile (four-kilometer) track has seen some of the most spectacular races in history since its construction in 1909. The speedway and the Hall of Fame Museum are both American treasures and National Historic Landmarks.Time your visit for the annual Indianapolis 500 race in May and scream along with over 250,000 fans as the world’s best drivers push their cars to the limit. In July, drivers battle it out in the NASCAR Brickyard 400, while each August the city is flooded with motor cycling fans who come to experience the Red Bull Motorbike GP. Each event is preceded by a series of practice and qualification days leading up to race day that add to the anticipation and excitement. There’s plenty to see at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway outside of the racing events. Climb aboard the speedway tour bus for a 90-minute tour, which takes in the Pagoda timing suite, the Victory Podium and the famous Yard of Bricks. For an exciting change of pace, sign up for the Indy Racing Experience Driving Program. Pull on a helmet, gloves and jumpsuit and take an unforgettable lap in an authentic single- or two-seater IndyCar. The speed is limited only by how much you can handle! After you’ve explored the track, check out the extensive collection of race cars, bikes, trophies and memorabilia in the Hall of Fame Museum. The 18-hole golf course provides a relaxing alternative to the crowds and excitement at the track, and the fully licensed Indy Grill has a comprehensive menu when you need to refuel. If you are coming for one of the main events, there are large areas dedicated to camping and RVs , and a number of nearby hotels to suit all budgets. During race season, the speedway operates a convenient shuttle service from downtown. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is approximately six miles (9.5 kilometers) from the center of the city, in the appropriately named suburb of Speedway.
