La Guancha

La Guancha

Take a stroll down Ponce’s waterfront boardwalk and experience its lively dining scene, local music, playgrounds, boat rides and views out to Isla Caja de Muertos.

Paseo Tablado La Guancha is a boardwalk that hugs the shoreline of Ponce’s dazzling waterfront district, Playa Barrio. Experience life like the Ponceños and revel in the live salsa music, tasty street food and exciting beachside atmosphere. Visit the marina and rent a paddleboat or take advantage of the sweeping sea views from the observation tower.

Wander along the boardwalk and take in the sights. The timber decking is dotted with palm trees and lampposts. See the boats coming and going from the marina, which is sheltered by the narrow Gatas peninsula. On the western end of the boardwalk, you can rent a paddleboat or a kayak and set off on an adventure around the bay. Choose from a charter trip or a public ferry to Caja de Muertos, which can be seen directly offshore from the boardwalk. On the island, check out a 19th-century lighthouse and pretty beaches.

Climb to the upper level of La Guancha’s observation tower and enjoy expansive views across the bay. Walk to the eastern end of the boardwalk to see the tarpon swimming in the shallows. For a fun activity with the kids, visit the nearby Fisherman’s Club to buy small fish for hand feeding the tarpon. Kids will also love the playgrounds and arcade at La Guancha. Explore the sandy stretch of Ponce Beach on the boardwalk’s eastern border. Cool off under a leafy tree or dip your toes in the water.

Be sure to try some of the tasty street food available at the La Guancha vendors. Sample fritters, fried codfish or empañadillas. Grab a beer at one of the waterfront bars or check out the cafés and restaurants. See what’s on at the open-air stage. Live salsa and local music performances regularly occur on weekends.

La Guancha is a 10-minute drive or taxi ride south from the center of Ponce. There is plenty of parking available on site. Visit in the evenings and on weekends to experience the boardwalk at its most lively. Many shops and cafés close on Mondays and Tuesdays. The boardwalk is open year-round for free.
