Ponce’s plaza of delights is true to its name, with heritage architecture, glinting fountains, tree-lined arcades and the scent of freshly baked pastries in the air.

Spend some time in Ponce’s Plaza of Delights (Plaza las Delicias) and the city will show you its heart. Landmark colonial architecture dominates the city’s main square, while leafy Indian laurel trees and pretty gardens provide a feeling of serenity. Take a break from the bustle of downtown Ponce and enjoy people-watching in the city’s favorite meeting place. The plaza is split into two halves, Luis Muñoz Rivera Plaza to the north and Frederico Degetau Plaza to the south.

A great first stop in the plaza is the Parque de Bombas. This 19th-century former fire station is painted an eye-catching red and black. Admire its ornate architecture and then step inside to find Ponce’s visitor center. Find out what’s happening during your visit to the city.

Next door, you’ll see the monumental white-and-gray façade of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A religious building has stood on this site for nearly 300 years. Check out the neoclassical flourishes in the cathedral’s Gothic foundations and survey the interior to appreciate its light-filled nave and beautiful stained-glass windows.

Frederico Degetau Plaza is dominated by the Fuente de los Leones. This gorgeous fountain featured in the 1939 World Fair in New York before reaching its home in downtown Ponce. Check out the fountain’s beautifully carved lion sculptures and brightly colored base. Stroll to the northern plaza to see a statue of the Puerto Rican poet and politician Luis Muñoz Rivera, as well as two smaller fountains. After the sun sets, you might see local bands playing in the spacious plaza.

Some of Ponce’s premier attractions can be found on the surrounding streets. Check out the Teatro la Perla, Museo de la Historia de Ponce and the Museo de la Musica Puertorriguena. There are several cafés and restaurants located nearby, as well as panaderías with tempting freshly baked treats. Cultural festivities and religious processions are held in the square throughout the year. Check with the visitor center for more information.

The Plaza of Delights is located in the center of historic Ponce. It is easy to reach on foot, as well as by car, taxi and public bus. The plaza is free to visit year-round.
