The tallest church in Wiesbaden, this towering red brick structure is a neo-Gothic masterpiece, with towers reaching high into the sky.

The Market Church, or “Marktkirche” as it is called in German, stands out among the city’s buildings due to its tall spires and striking red color. Take the time to pay a visit to this wonderfully ornate neo-Gothic structure, which is as impressive for its level of detail as it is for its scale. Both the interior and the exterior are beautifully designed and you will be glad you made the trip, whether or not you are religious.

It took almost 10 years to complete the construction of the Market Church, which is quite unsurprising when one considers the level of intricacy involved in the design. The building is the work of architect Carl Boos, who completed the project in 1862. Visit today and see how, even more than 150 years on, the church’s main tower still soars high above the other buildings in the neighborhood.

See how carefully the church’s original features have been preserved and, in some cases, restored. The church sustained damage during World War II, but the affected parts were carefully rebuilt afterward and it now looks as good as new. However, many new features have been added to the church over the years too, such as the stained-glass choir windows that date from the mid 20th century.

Other features to look out for inside the building include the beautiful statues of Christ and the four Evangelists, as well as a wooden nativity scene that dates from the 1980s. The high ceilings are painted like the night sky, scattered with golden stars, while the church’s vast organ has 6,200 pipes.

The Market Church stands on Wiesbaden’s scenic Schlossplatz. The church is open for at least a few hours each afternoon, as well as in the morning on selected days. It’s closed on Mondays. Wander in whenever you find it open and explore it at your own pace, or, if you would prefer to attend a service, come on a Sunday morning and join the locals who worship here each week.
