Still the seat of the city government, this magnificent building has held a place at the center of Wiesbaden’s politics for around 130 years.

The Neues Rathaus stands at the center of Wiesbaden’s stunningly photogenic old town. As with the many other beautiful buildings that stand here in the Schlossplatz, the Neues Rathaus offers an overwhelming amount of detail to catch the eye. Come here to capture its beauty in your photos before spending some time exploring the other attractions of the square and beyond.

The name Neues Rathaus might translate to New Town Hall, but in the historic city of Wiesbaden, everything is relative. In this case, this “new” building was actually erected in 1887. It was designed by the noted architect Georg von Hauberisser. Look up at its pretty Renaissance Revival façade and marvel at the fact that it has survived so much, including direct damage in 1945. Though some features were lost due to the damage, restoration work was carefully carried out and the building remains splendid today.

Most of the space in the building is occupied by government offices, but there is also a restaurant in the basement. Come here to enjoy wonderful food inside this beautiful building. Afterward, take a look around some of the other sights in the old town.

Pay a visit the stunning Marktkirche, the tall, red church next to the Rathaus. Take a guided tour of the Stadtschloss Wiesbaden, an opulent Neoclassical palace that stands opposite the Neues Rathaus. And snap photos in front of the Marktbrunnen, the centuries-old fountain topped by a rearing golden lion.

Walk just a few minutes from the square to encounter other Wiesbaden highlights, like the beautiful green space called the Bowling Green, where the grand Kurhaus stands. On the south end of the green is the Hessian State Theatre. Come here in the evening to treat yourself to one of its acclaimed operas, plays, ballets or concerts.

Find the Neues Rathaus in the heart of Wiesbaden’s old town, a 20-minute walk from the city’s main train station. Come on a day with good weather so you can make the most of the beautiful square in which the building stands.
