Spread over three floors, this comprehensive historical museum showcases fascinating military paraphernalia dating from the Boer War to the present.

Go on a journey through the Fraser Coast’s remarkable history at the Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum. Situated in the historic port district, this museum presents an intriguing insight into the region’s European settlement and the fledgling colony’s commitment to wars in distant lands. Peruse the large collection of photographs, scale models, medals, uniforms and weapons on display in thoughtfully curated exhibitions.

Before stepping into the museum, take a moment to admire the façade of the museum building. The structure dates back to 1857 and is an excellent example of colonial architecture. Step through the high-arched central doorway and begin your exploration of over 7,000 artifacts and items on display. At the entrance, you’ll see a restored Ferret Scout car and a howitzer. A large mural stretches along the side of the building.

Learn about Australia’s involvement in wars and battles, including the Boer War, the two world wars and the Vietnam War. The museum has a large collection of Victoria Cross medals and a Cross of Valour medal. You’ll see a superb range of model planes and ships, as well as sculptures and busts of important figures. Check out antique weaponry, uniforms and helmets. Inspect the Boer War bugle and the bullet hole in a stone collected from Turkey.

On the museum’s mezzanine floor, you’ll find a series of displays dedicated to Australia’s involvement in the Gallipoli campaign in World War I. See a topographic model of the battlefield and learn about the military leaders and servicemen. Inquire with the helpful volunteers if you have any questions about the displays.

The Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum is located in the city’s historic port district. It is a 10-minute walk from the main railway station. Admission is inexpensive and discounts are available for schoolchildren, families and couples. The museum is open daily, with reduced hours on weekends. It is closed on public holidays. You can purchase a combination ticket that allows entry to neighboring museums and education centers, including the Customs House Interpretive Centre and the Bond Store Museum.
