Natural and man-made wonders run through the spectacular McKee Botanical Garden in the southern part of Vero Beach. This labyrinth of spectacles contains marvels such as the world’s largest mahogany table and an incredibly strong bamboo fortress. Pass the orchids and waterlilies of the streams and ponds as you explore the park’s labyrinth of trails.
Call ahead and reserve a motorized scooter to explore the park in style. Download and print off the Children’s Guide to McKee, which teaches the little ones about the local plants and animals, with a map to the park’s various treasures. Among the top sights is the Pergola, which is filled with butterflies, insects and birds.
Spot the world’s largest mahogany table in the Hall of Giants and cross the Historic Stone Bridge to sit by the scenic pond. Try to spot the brown-banded water snake in the Watery Maze and marvel at the impressive architectural design of the Bamboo Pavilion. Check out the enormous Cypress Stump that dates back thousands of years. Hike along the secret trail to reach the Tiki Room.
Browse the items for sale in the Garden Gift Shop at the entrance to the complex. Next door, take a break at the Garden Café, which serves meals and drinks. Look around the Reference Library and pick out the books that appeal to you.
The site opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon. There is an entrance fee, with discounts available for seniors and children. Members and toddlers can enter for free.
The McKee Botanical Garden is in the southern outskirts of Vero Beach in central Florida. If you arrive at Vero Beach Regional Airport, rent a car to drive south for about 15 minutes to reach the garden. While in the Vero Beach South district, make sure to visit other nearby attractions such as the Lagoon Greenway, the Oslo Road Boat Ramp and Tanglewood Village.
