Travel back more than 900 years in time when you step into a replica of a medieval castle and its dwellings.

Experience what life was like in medieval times at Mountfitchet Castle, an accurate recreation of a Norman defensive stronghold and the village that stood within its walls. The entertainment complex sits on a hill on the site of the original castle and village. Look at siege weapons, lift swords and tour the numerous houses and dwellings.

The castle is a replica of a wooden fort built by William the Conqueror, around the year 1066 when the Normans from France invaded England. Archeologists and historians were involved in its design to make the experience as authentic as possible for visitors. An Iron Age fort, Roman fort and a Saxon and Viking settlement have also occupied this location.

Climb up the watchtower, walk along the castle walls and see replicas of weapons that would’ve been used to bombard other defensive structures. Put on a knight’s helmet and try and lift a heavy sword above your head.

Wander in and out of the village houses that are constructed from English oak trees. The thatched roofs are made from wood, turf and straw. These are the same materials that the Normans used. Put yourself in the position of a village lawbreaker by sitting in the stocks.

As you tour the 10-acre (4-hectare) site, you will see lots of animals such as deer, chickens and goats. These are rescued animals and the castle’s owners let them roam freely throughout the grounds.

The castle and its village are open daily from March until November. The ticket price includes access to the House on the Hill Toy Museum and Dinosaur Encounters, where there are life-sized models of dinosaurs.

Mountfitchet Castle is situated about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Bishop’s Stortford. There is metered parking in the parking lot adjacent to the attraction. If you are in London or Cambridge, you can arrive by train. Stansted Mountfitchet Station is next door to the attraction.
