Museo Volvo Ocean Race

Hands-on exhibits and personal stories help you to understand what makes the Volvo Ocean Race one of most demanding round-the-world boat races.

The Museo Volvo Ocean Race is an interactive museum and exhibition space dedicated to competitive sailing. It guides visitors on a discovery of the history of the Volvo Ocean Race, the challenges faced by racing sailors and the world’s marine ecosystems. With the help of informative touch-screen panels, models, simulators, storyboards and videos, the Museo Volvo Ocean Race provides hours of ocean-themed education and entertainment.

The museum opens with the evolution of the triennial Volvo Ocean Race from its inception as the Whitbread Round the World Race. Lasting for 9 months, stopping at 12 cities and covering 51,785 miles (83,340 kilometers), many call it the Everest of Sailing. See how the technology and shape of yachts have advanced since the race was established in 1973. Play with interactive displays that recreate activities aboard a Volvo Open 70 racing yacht.

Get an insight into the different marine ecosystems present on Earth and those encountered by the race competitors. Displays also highlight the ways in which humankind is putting the oceans and its inhabitants in danger.

The Legends Gallery showcases some of the most celebrated skippers and crew members. Among them are Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Ramón Carlin, a Mexican washing machine magnate that won the inaugural race with a crew made up of family members.

Experience the thrill of crashing through huge waves and battling extreme weather conditions on a race simulator. Another area of the museum focuses on the end of the race, when sailing enthusiasts welcome boats at the finish line and crew members become reunited with their families. Don’t miss the chance to see inside a control room. This is where officials check on the progress of boats, the safety of the crew and climatic changes.

Find the Museo Volvo Ocean Race on the Llevant Dock of the Port of Alicante. It’s 1.2 miles (1.9 kilometers) away from Alicante train terminal. The museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday, and Mondays in summer. Admission is free. Nautical souvenirs are available at the museum shop.
