Nan Lian Garden

A green oasis in Hong Kong’s urban jungle, this replica of a classical Chinese garden has waterfalls, ornamental ponds, waterside pavilions and ancient trees.

Experience a sense of calm at Nan LIan Garden as you gaze out across lotus ponds, stroll by manicured lawns or sip traditional Chinese tea.

The garden is built in the classical style of the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618–907). During this period of Chinese history, the art of landscaping and garden design blossomed. The design for Nan Lian is based on the blueprint of the Jiangshouju Garden in China, the only Tang garden that survives with its original layout. The plans were written more than 1,400 years ago.

The garden occupies an area of 8.6 acres (3.5 hectares). Water is the main feature, and structures are simple and elegant. The rocks, plants and trees are arranged according to specific rules.

After entering the garden through the Black Lintel Gate, take the one-way route that brings you to all the main features of Nan Lian Garden.Pause by the Lotus Pond and wonder at the beauty of the Pavilion of Absolute Perfection, a decorative, octagonal golden tower that is the centerpiece of the garden. Inhale deeply at Fragrance Hill with its sweet smelling orange jasmine and lilies.

One of the many pleasures of a visit to Nan Lian is taking tea at Song Cha Xie, the teahouse. Sample the Wuyi Yan Cha, made from tea leaves that grow on the steep, mineral-rich cliffs at Wuyi Shan in the southeast of mainland China.

If you are feeling hungry, try the Buddhist vegetarian restaurant behind the waterfall. The dining room’s huge glass window looks through the fast-flowing water and out onto the garden.

Nan Lian is adjacent to Chi Lin Nunnery, in the Diamond Hill area of Kowloon. The garden’s entrance is less than five minutes’ walk away from Diamond Hill MTR Station. At the station, take exit C2.

Nan Lian Garden is open daily and admission is free.
