Dresden’s historic square is host to a traditional Christmas market, alfresco dining and one of the city’s largest churches.

Almost entirely flattened during World War II, this central square lay dormant for much of the 20th century. Reconstruction of New Market Square in its traditional style began following the fall of communism and today the square is full of life. Visit the square to see the stunning Fraeuenkirche, to take in a December Christmas market or to people-watch from one of the many outdoor eateries that line the square.

Visit the square on a Sunday morning to watch churchgoers file out of the monumental Frauenkirche. Like much of Neumarkt, the church was destroyed in the 1945 bombing of Dresden. Rather than rebuild, a decision was made to leave the rubble in its place as a lasting reminder of the effects of war. In recent years the church, along with the square, have been returned to their former glory. Admire the Baroque trimmings of the square. Look for the looming statue of Martin Luther that stands outside the church.

See New Market Square transformed into a traditional Christmas market over the month of December. German Christmas markets are a lively and picturesque experience, and the New Market Square market is among the most popular in the city. Buy handmade souvenirs and Christmas decorations as you walk between the stalls. Sit down for a glass of gluhwein, a spiced hot wine, and mingle with the locals.

The square is lined by a number of historic buildings, mostly built in the Baroque and Rococo styles. Visit the Art Academy, the Dresden Castle and its stables and the Albertinum while you are in the area.

New Market Square is located in central Dresden and can easily be reached by tram or bus. Walk from the many hotels in the area. The square is open daily and is free of charge.
