Look on as surfers and boogie boarders ride the waves, or take to the water yourself, and enjoy picturesque sunsets from waterfront bars at this centrally located beach.

Olas Altas Beach is one of Mazatlán’s most well-known beaches. The place buzzes with activity, particularly when the weather is warm and dry. Sit on the sand and observe surfers tackle the waves or rent a board and join them out in the water.

This beach was one of the first in the region to attract tourists back in the 1950s. Admire the small curving bay of golden sand, which is lapped by the Pacific Ocean on one side and lined by an esplanade on the other. Despite its fame, Olas Altas Beach is notably less crowded than the beaches of Mazatlán’s Golden Zone.

The name Olas Altas Beach means High Wave Beach and the rolling waves here have been attracting surfers for years. April to October is the best time for surfers, when the waves can reach heights of 6 feet (2 meters) or more.

Besides surfing, the beach is a great place to relax. Arrive early and set your towel down on the sand. The waters here have strong current and waves and thus aren’t well suited for swimming. If you want to swim, head for the safer Carpa Olivera, an enclosed seawater pool located at the northern end of the bay.

Stroll along the Malecón, a waterfront promenade that runs around Mazatlán’s coastline. Starting at the southern end of the beach, amble past monuments celebrating acclaimed figures from Mexican culture. These include tributes to the actor Pedro Infante and composer Fernando Valades.

Facing the beach on the opposite side of the Malecón are collection of bars, cafés and restaurants. Find a seat at an outdoor terrace and enjoy the ocean views while dining on classic Mexican dishes such as quesadillas and tacos. The beach, esplanade and terraces all serve as excellent vantage points for scenic sunsets.

Situated in the south of Mazatlán, Olas Altas Beach is just a short walk from the historic Old Town. Parking is available across from the beach.
