Uninterrupted views of Lake Como, architecturally impressive landmarks and people watching from café terraces make this one of Como’s most popular squares.

Elegant and animated Piazza Cavour is Como’s main square and a focal point of the city’s historic center. It is a place to enjoy views of Lake Como and its surrounding hills, to admire striking architecture and to be part of festivals and cultural events.

During medieval times Piazza Cavour was nothing but marshland. The area became Como’s principal port in the 14th century before being turned into an urban square in the latter part of the 19th century.

The north side of the square runs along the shores of Lake Como. Stand at the piazza’s edge or sit on one of the many benches and gaze out across the sparkling water. Watch as boats come and go from the dock, marvel at the surrounding forest-clad hills and look for the Faro Voltiano lighthouse in the distance.

Take time to check out the square’s architecture. Overlooking the west side is the historic Hotel Metropole Suisse, which dates back to 1846. On the opposite side you will find colorful Italianate buildings that house cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlors. Sit at an outdoor terrace, order some refreshments and enjoy people-watching opportunities. Often, you can see street performers here.

Piazza Cavour also hosts events such as artisan fairs, concerts and markets. Try to be here for June’s Swing Crash Festival, a celebration of music from the‘30s and ‘40s with live concerts, dance classes and competitions. Visit the square in December when it hosts a Christmas market. Browse the stalls for handicrafts and souvenirs produced in the Lake Como region.

Situated in the heart of Como’s city center, Piazza Cavour is just a 5-minute walk from the main train station. While you are in the neighborhood, go to the square’s tourism office and collect a free map with information about Como’s major attractions. Combine your visit with a sightseeing trip to the magnificent Cathedral of Como. Then walk along the waterfront to the Funicular Como-Brunate and ride the funicular railway up to the scenic village of Brunate.
