With fluffy white sand and exceptionally clear water, this beach is the epitome of Arraial do Cabo’s nickname of the “Brazilian Caribbean.”

A short boat ride or pleasant hike from Arraial do Cabo is the postcard-perfect and popular Pontal do Atalaia Beach (Praia do Pontal de Atalaia). Spend a day basking in the warm sunshine, take a dip in the calm water and enjoy the views while sitting in the shadow of forest-clad hills.

Pontal do Atalaia Beach is actually two beaches in one set on the southeastern shoreline of the city’s peninsula. Rocks separate the two beaches and it’s possible to get between the two on foot. The brilliant white sand is perfect for enjoying a relaxed walk or to lay down a towel and top up your tan. At the northern end of the bay is an area of dunes, where beachgoers often practice sandboarding.

Paddle in the rippling waves of the translucent Atlantic Ocean and look down to spot tropical fish species. The water is shallow and a safe environment for swimmers of all abilities. Grab your snorkeling equipment for a closer look at the beach’s aquatic residents.

Food stands set up on the beach and offer light snacks, such as sandwiches, ice creams, fruit juices and other drinks. Some have tables and umbrellas, which allow you to eat in the shade. Many visitors arrive with their own food. Just remember to maintain the beach’s pristine condition by taking all of your trash with you.

One of the easiest ways to get to Pontal do Atalaia Beach is to catch a boat from Forno Port. Be sure to confirm the return departure time with the boat owner. It’s under a 5-mile (8-kilometer) drive from the city center and parking is available for a fee. An alternative option is to go on a 90-minute hike and make a stop at the Atalaia Viewpoint. A wooden staircase of 200-plus steps leads from the road to the beach.

Pontal do Atalaia Beach is busiest during the Brazilian summers and on weekends. It’s an east-facing beach so arrive early if you want to make the most of the sun.
