Queens Park

Lush greenery borders the serene walkways of this heritage-listed park, which overlooks the Mary River in the city’s historic portside district.

Relax in beautiful Queens Park by enjoying the views from a shaded bench and checking out the fascinating plant collection. Experience local Maryborough history and ride a miniature steam train around the majestic trees.

Bring a picnic and enjoy a meal on the rolling green lawns that overlook the river. Meander along the winding paths and admire the colours of the ornamental flowerbeds. One of the park’s highlights is the fernery, which contains a range of exotic and native species.

The park is the home of the monthly Model Engineers and Live Steamers Association gathering. Join the fun and ride on a miniature train, which takes passengers on a scenic trip through the park. On Thursdays, you can catch the Mary Ann steam train from the western corner of the park and enjoy a riverside ride on tracks that originally served Maryborough’s wharf. The train is a replica of the first steam engine built in Queensland.

Stand beneath the hanging root systems of the impressive banyan fig trees, which are believed to be over 100 years old. Nearby, a waterfall cascades into a pond adorned with pretty blooms.

Appreciate some of the park’s historical features, which date back to its inception in 1860 as one of the first botanical gardens in Australia. On the last Sunday of the month a traditional brass band plays in the 19th-century rotunda, which features intricate latticework.

Examine the old cannons that aim out over the river. These monuments link back to 1914, when Maryborough feared World War I attacks. At the park’s entrance gates, you’ll see the war memorial that commemorates the local soldiers who died in World War I and World War II. Notice the statue of the winged figure of victory on top of the memorial obelisk.

Entrance to Queens Park is free. The park is within a short walk from the historical centre of Maryborough. Visit on the last Sunday of the month to experience the park’s programme of festivities and special train rides.
