Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city of Vicenza is the striking Santuario della Madonna di Monte Berico. Visit this baroque-style church to see a wealth of religious art and a sacred icon of the Madonna. Afterwards, relax at one of the nearby cafés and gaze across the rooftops of Vicenza’s city center. The church dates back to the 15th century, when it served to receive pilgrims that arrived to the city.
Stand at the steps that lead to the church’s main entrance and admire its architecturally breathtaking façade. The building is symmetrical on three sides and defined by grand pillars, carvings of religious scenes and statues of angels. The carvings and statues are the work of the Italian baroque sculptor Orazio Marinali. Look up at the central dome and then check out the red-brick clock tower.
Step inside the church to see the impressive collection of artwork and opulent decorations. Spot paintings by revered Venetian painters such as Alessandro Maganza and Paolo Veronese. Go to the glittering altar, dominated by a 15th-century statue of Madonna by Nicolò da Venezia. After mass, worshippers are invited to leave offerings and say prayers to the icon.

See 15th-century frescoes and portraits of theologians that belonged to the Order of the Servants of Mary. The tour also includes a visit to the church’s terrace, which affords panoramic views of Vicenza.
Santuario della Madonna di Monte Berico is about a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute walk from Vicenza’s city center. The latter part of the walk follows a beautiful arcaded walkway. Free parking is available at Piazzale della Vittoria, in front of the church’s main entrance. Before returning to the city, relax at one of the nearby cafés and take in city views.
