Scottish Rite Cathedral

Discover the fascinating mathematical elements involved in this Masonic building, one of the city’s architectural highlights that incorporates neo-Gothic and Elizabethan styling inside and out.

The Scottish Rite Cathedral is one of the most prominent historic buildings in Indianapolis. Try to spot the intriguing design elements incorporated into the magnificent neo-Gothic façade. Built for the Valley of Indianapolis’ Scottish Rite, the building has a distinctly Masonic appearance. The cathedral is a work of mathematical mastery, incorporating numerological elements defined by Freemasonry into its design.

Stand back from the Scottish Rite Cathedral to appreciate its remarkable architecture. When measuring in feet, nearly every dimension of the building’s design is evenly divisible by three, which reflects the traditional three degrees of Freemasonry. Check out the immense bell tower, which rises to an impressive 212 feet (65 meters) above the ground and contains a 54-bell carillon.

Step into the cathedral’s main entrance, known as the Tiler’s Room, and marvel at its intricate design. This cube-shaped room measures 33 feet (10 meters) in each direction and its decorations display Masonic symbols and Zodiac signs. Check out the cathedral’s ballroom, which features an Elizabethan-style design. The room is 99 square feet (30 square meters), with a dancing area spanning 66 square feet (20 square meters). Stroll across the white-oak floor panels and gaze up at the ornate 200-light chandelier. The cathedral also has a sumptuous lounge and a theater for staging concerts and events. Find out when the next performance by the cathedral’s resident Scottish Rite Orchestra will be held.

Explore the Scottish Rite Cathedral’s interior as part of a guided tour, which are complimentary for individuals and small groups. Tours are held Tuesday through Friday, as well as the third Saturday of the month. Alternatively, rent the cathedral as a venue for your event in Indianapolis. Stop by the cathedral’s on-site café between Monday and Friday for light refreshments.

The cathedral is located adjacent to the American Legion Mall, a short distance north of the historic downtown district of Indianapolis. Add the building to your walking tour of the city or catch the bus to the nearby stop. The cathedral is free to visit during open hours.
