Shrine of Remembrance

This serene sanctuary and its surrounding reserve honors those who fought for their country.

The Shrine of Remembrance is a classical homage to the Australian men and women who served their country in war. Visit to see an architectural marvel with imposing steps, columns and a temple-shaped roof.

Head to the shrine to soak in the peaceful and solemn atmosphere. View the remembrance stone with the biblical inscription: “Greater love hath no man” that lies at the center of the sanctuary.

The Shrine of Remembrance is surrounded by 13 hectares (32 acres) of scenic parkland. Tourists and natives alike have been gathering at this poignant Melbourne symbol to pay their respects since 1934.

If you can, attend the ceremony on November 11 to witness the highpoint of the year. A ray of light shines through a gap in the roof to illuminate the word "love" in the inscription. If you aren’t in Melbourne at that time, however, the Ray of Light Ceremony is re-enacted daily every half an hour using electric light.

Learn about Australia’s military history in the education center, which contains classrooms and a meeting room. Browse the Gallery of Medals to get a close look at accolades including two Victoria Crosses. Take photos of the panoramic views of the city from the site’s elevated position. Participate in a free, guided tour available each afternoon. Visit the shop and browse the educational books, clothing and souvenirs. Stroll around the reserve to enjoy monuments, such as the Legacy Garden of Appreciation and the Gallipoli Memorial.

The site is free to visit and open from the morning until late afternoon. You can find the shrine in Kings Domain on St Kilda Road. It is a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) walk from Flinders Street Railway Station, Melbourne’s principal transport hub. Most trams reach the memorial or if your prefer to drive, parking is fairly easy to find on nearby streets.
